The U.S. trade deficit with China is expected to have hit a record of about $300 billion in 2011. Obama has set a target of doubling total U.S. exports between 2010 and 2015.

Kirk's office negotiates and enforces trade deals. But it has only about 250 employees, which could tempt countries to think they can flout world trade rules, Kirk said.

"This (the new unit) will provide a much better tool basket and put more bodies in terms of being able to develop some of these cases and gather the intelligence that is necessary to take some of these complex matters before the World Trade Organization," he said.

"There will be additional people, some additional resources," Kirk said without providing details of any extra funding for the unit.

We're going to double US exports of what?

The US leads the world in Intellectual Property (IP) such as movies, music, software and games. Microsoft isn't just the largest software company in America. They're the largest software company in the world. The second largest software company in the world is Electronic Arts, based in the USA as well. Hollywood is unmatched anywhere on this planet for movies and entertainment, and most music heard in the world is made right here in America.

China is a huge consumer of entertainment, but lousy at paying the piper (literally) because of the rampant IP thievery going on. The Chinese do not enforce laws against pirating software, movies, music or games and that's why their production of intellectual property is next to nothing.

Obama starting to protect Arsenal of Democracy.

Happy-clappy economists say globalization will eliminate wars by building economic interdependency between nations.

As Imperial Japan proved at start of WWII, it will only increased chances of war. Japan depended on oil from South-East Asia and scrap metal from US. Both of which were being threatened to be blocked off because of their invasion of China. Result was they preemptively attacked Pearl Harbor to try to knock out US.

US must protect our technological/industrial base in case of future aggressors.

Countries without industrial base are called 'colonies'.

    automotive vehicles, engines, parts,

US built Cars are simply way to expensive for what you get, and the US engine parts are actually all made overseas anyway. Anything automotive that the USA have to offer can be bought from alternative sources for less money and more reliable quality to boot.

Actually starting to feel like a colony here already. Not only do we need to protect our present manufacturing base, we should rebuild it. We once had a thriving textiles industry in NC that has slipped away, at least in this area.

MeaneGene, the entertainment industry, right? Or is it the IP in general? I gets that's what SOPA & PIPA are about then, trying to glean more profit from those industries. I first associate those laws with command & control, in other words control of internet, and secondarily the protection of IP.
